Don't Censor Me (1993)

Writer's picture: Joel CaballeroJoel Caballero

Don't Censor Me is the second studio album by the Christian modern rock band Audio Adrenaline, released on October 1, 1993 by ForeFront Records. The album was produced by Steve Griffith and The Gotee Brothers, which consisted of Toby

McKeehan (TobyMac of DC Talk), Joey Elway and Todd Collins, founders of Gotee Records, producing only two tracks.

Don't Censor Me was a much-improved follow up to their self-titled debut album but the band members feel "it still didn't hit the mark." Despite that, Audio A hit the mark at Christian CHR with its first two singles: "My World View" featuring a cameo vocal appearance by DC Talk's Kevin Max and "Big House." It was the latter song that received the most airplay and even a music video was made. "Big House" was a big hit not just at Christian radio but with youth retreats and sing-a-longs for kids, thanks in part to its sing-a-long chorus. CCM Magazine ranked the song at number 25 in their 2006 book The 100 Greatest Christian Songs in Christian Music.

Other hits followed like "Can't Take God Away" and "Rest Easy" for Christian CHR with "We're a Band" and the title song for Christian Rock radio. Don't Censor Me started climbing the Billboard Top Christian Albums chart in 1994 after a slow start. It peaked at number 11. In 1995, Audio A released their first Video EP on VHS titled Big House featuring behind-the-scenes footage and music videos for "Big House," "We're a Band," "A.K.A. Public School" and "PDA" from their first album. The video for "A.K.A. Public School" features an appearance by DC Talk playing the "three cool guys" at a high school basketball tournament. That same year, the band received their first Dove Award nominations for Rock Album of the Year, Rock Recorded Song of the Year and Short Form Music Video of the Year, both for "Big House."
