God With Us: A Celebration of Christmas Carols & Classics (1997)

God With Us: A Celebration of Christmas Carols & Classics is a compilation project album released in the fall of 1997 on Sparrow Records. The album serves as a companion to the 1996 release Emmanuel: A Musical Celebration of the Life of Christ and is executive produced by Norman Miller. A multi-artists national tour proceeded after the release of Emmanuel and features talented CCM artists performing Christmas carols in the first half of the show before segueing into the presentation of the musical.

It was in this album that the Christian vocal group Avalon recorded their first Christmas song "Angels We Have Heard On High." They first performed it on the 1995 Young Messiah Farewell Tour, but at that time, two of the eventual four band mates had not signed with Sparrow Records. When they were signed to Sparrow a year later, they participated on the Emmanuel Tour and performed this song again. Avalon would later record a new arrangement of "Angels..." on their 2000 release Joy: A Christmas Collection.

In addition to Avalon, other artists in this project include CeCe Winans, Michael W. Smith, Sandi Patty, Larnelle Harris, Steve Green, Anointed, Twila Paris and more. There are six previously released tracks while the rest of the album consists of new holiday recordings of Christmas carols and hymns with contemporary arrangements. God With Us peaked at number 10 on the Billboard Top Christian Albums chart. It won a Dove Award for Special Event Album of the Year, awarded to the participating artists and Miller for producing in 1998 at the 29th GMA Dove Awards. The album is out of print and is not available for streaming. A YouTube link to listen to the album is posted below this article.
