Morning Like This (1986)

Updated: Apr 7

Morning Like This is the eighth studio album by Christian singer Sandi Patty. It was her first album to be released on Word Records on February 13, 1986. Patty and Greg Nelson produced the album.

Morning Like This was considered a successful album and a turning point in her career. A few months after its release, Patty had reached national acclaim after her rendition of "The Star-Spangled Banner" was included during the ABC Statue of Liberty re-dedication broadcast on July 6, 1986. This exposure led to multiple mainstream television appearances including The Tonight Show and Christmas in Washington.

CCM Magazine has given the album critical acclaim by ranking Morning Like This at number 87 in their 2001 book The 100 Greatest Albums in Christian Music, while the track "Love In Any Language" was ranked at number 73 in their 2006 book The 100 Greatest Songs in Christian Music. Morning Like This would give Patty her first number one album on the Billboard Top Christian Albums chart, and finished in the Top 3 for three years on their year-end charts, including taking the number one album of 1987 and was certified Gold in 1987 and Platinum in 1993 by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) for sales of 1 million copes.

In 1987, Patty won her first solo Grammy Award for Best Gospel Performance, Female for Morning Like This at the 29th Grammy Awards. That same year, Patty won 3 Dove Awards for Female Vocalist of the Year (she won the same title the following year), Artist of the Year and Inspirational Album of the Year at the 18th GMA Dove Awards. In 1988, Patty was a co-winner, along with Gloria Gaither and Phil McHugh, for Song of the Year for the track "In the Name of the Lord" at the 19th GMA Dove Awards.

Patty released a concert video in 1987 on VHS entitled Let There Be Praise - The Concert Video featuring songs from Morning Like This and other favorites including her signature hit "We Shall Behold Him."
