Steve Green is the debut solo album by Christian singer Steve Green. It was released on March 29, 1984 by Sparrow Records. The album was produced by Greg Nelson, who is best-known for producing Sandi Patty's albums throughout the 1980's. Both Green and Patty, and Larnelle Harris, would be the top inspirational singers in that time period and have all worked with Nelson.
After his time with The Gaither Vocal Band and his one and only Christian Rock album with White Heart, Green released his first album of pop and inspirational songs, often referred to as "the male Sandi Patty," because Green has the same similar style of music that Patty records. Even before he was a soloist, Green has sung backing vocals on Patty's albums. The lead single was "Proclaim the Glory of the Lord," which did well on the combined Christian AC/CHR chart where it climbed up to number 12. But it was the track, "People Need the Lord" that stood out.
"People Need the Lord" was ranked at number 44 in the 2006 book The 100 Greatest Songs in Christian Music by CCM Magazine. It's an evangelistic song that resonated with Green, because, according to Green, his missionary parents gave their lives to evangelize and the song connects with people in a big way.
It was a big hit on the Christian Inspirational chart and gave Green his first number one song. It is his signature song and he still performs this song on his set list at his concerts. Steve Green began a slow climb on the Billboard Top Christian Albums chart, peaking at number 24. In 1985, Green won his first Dove Award for Male Vocalist of the Year. The tracks were nominated for Song of the Year with "Proclaim the Glory of the Lord" in 1985 and "People Need the Lord" in 1986 and 1987.
