The Great Adventure (1992)

Updated: Apr 30

The Great Adventure is the fifth studio album by Christian singer - songwriter Steven Curtis Chapman, released on June 29, 1992 by Sparrow Records.

Produced by Phil Naish, The Great Adventure would be Chapman's most successful album with the title song serving as the lead single (and his very first music video) going to number one on the Christian radio charts. CCM Magazine gave accolades to Chapman as the album was listed at number 33 in their 2001 book The 100 Greatest Albums in Christian Music and the title song listed at the Top 10 at number 8 in their 2006 book The 100 Greatest Songs in Christian Music.

The album features guest appearances by artists like BeBe Winans, Toby McKeehan of DC Talk and country and bluegrass singer Ricky Skaggs, who provides backing vocals on the track "Walk With The Wise." Chapman's wife Mary Beth Chapman co-wrote the track "Maria." The Great Adventure topped the Billboard Top Christian Albums chart and was certified Gold in less than a year by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA).

In 1993 at the 24th GMA Dove Awards, Chapman won six out of his seven nominated Dove Awards including Song of the Year, which he co-won with fellow Christian singer, songwriter and friend Geoff Moore, as well as winning Artist of the Year, Songwriter of the Year and Pop/Contemporary Album of the Year. The following year, Chapman won two additional Dove Awards for Songwriter of the Year and Pop/Contemporary Recorded Song of the Year for the track "Go There With You." Chapman also won his second Grammy Award for Best Pop/Contemporary Gospel Album at the 35th Grammy Awards.
