Transform (2000)

Updated: Jul 20, 2023

Transform is the sixth studio album by Australian Christian singer - songwriter Rebecca St. James, released on October 24, 2000 by ForeFront Records.

Like her previous albums, St. James co-wrote the majority of the album, with the exceptions of "One" and "In Me." Transform has a more electronic drive to the album. Songs such as "For the Love of God" and "Merciful" are rock-driven songs backed by string arrangements, while "Reborn" is a dance-groove track. The song "Wait for Me," a track about sexual purity, was solely written by St. James. It has become one of her staple songs, being featured on every compilation album released by the singer to date. St. James talked about the song, saying:

"The idea for this song came from letters that I have written to my future husband, that I will one day give to him. I sing it not just to him but on behalf of young women today, encouraging the future husbands of our generation to stay sexually pure, to wait for us."

To promote the song "Wait for Me" as a radio single, St. James released the book Wait for Me: Rediscovering the Joy of Purity in Romance, which went on to sell over 100,000 copies and spawn a journal and study guide. The song and book promotes sexual abstinence before marriage, and St. James has since become a major spokesperson for the subject.

Tedd T., who has producer St. James' previous albums God, Christmas and Pray, produced two songs "Universe" and "Wait for Me," with Matt Bronleewe producing a majority of the album. Dann Haff produced the songs "One" and "In Me" and Pete Kipley produced the song "My Hope." Transform peaked at number 7 on the Heatseekers Albums, number 14 on the Top Christian Albums and number 166 on the Top 200 Albums charts in Billboard magazine.

In 2002, St. James was nominated in five categories for Song of the Year for the song "Wait for Me," Modern Rock/Alternative Recorded Song of the Year for "For the Love of God," Rap/Hip Hop/Dance Recorded Song of the Year for "Reborn," Short Form Music Video for "Reborn" and Female Vocalist of the Year at the 33rd GMA Dove Awards. St. James did receive a participating Dove Award that same year for her participation on the various artists album The Prayer of Jabez: Music... A Worship Experience.
