With Footnotes is the official debut album by the Christian music trio 2nd Chapter of Acts. It is their first album on the Myrrh Records label and distributed by Word Records, released in 1974. A majority of the album (and subsequent releases) was written by group member Annie Herring, with the exception of a couple of songs she co-wrote with her husband and producer Buck Herring and the opening track "Which Way the Wind Blows" with sibling and group member Nelly Ward (Greisen). "The Devil's Lost Again" was written by Buck Herring and Edward Overstreet. Buck Herring produced all of the 2nd Chapter of Acts' albums.
With Footnotes contains one of the group's most well-known songs, "Easter Song," which was named by CCM Magazine in 1998 as the number 4 Christian Song of All Time. In 2006, CCM ranked the song at number 69 as one of The 100 Greatest Songs of Christian Music. The album itself was ranked at number 72 in 2001 as one of The 100 Greatest Albums in Christian Music. Four of the tracks on this album were re-recorded songs from their 1972 unreleased first album from MGM Records: "I Don't Wanna Go Home," "He Loves Me," "The Devil's Lost Again" and "With Jesus," originally titled "Mile After Mile."
Musicians on With Footnotes include musician-producer Michael Omartian on the synthesizer, as well as string and horn arrangements and Michael Been (future lead singer of the 1980s alternative rock band The Call) on bass guitar. In 1989, this album and their 1975 album In the Volume of the Book were reissued as one CD by Live Oak Records, but have since been out of print. A YouTube link to listen to the album is posted below this article.
NOTE: tracks 1, 5, 7, 8 and 11 are available in the 1981 compilation album Encores on both CD and digital formats.
